Mickey Rourke Thinks Tom Cruise Is “Irrelevant”

Mickey Rourke is officially over Tom Cruise. The Wrestler actor recently shared how he really felt about the Top Gun: Maverick star, calling Cruise “irrelevant” and claiming that Cruise has “been doing the same effing part for 35 years.”

Rourke laid into Cruise while appearing as a guest on Piers Morgan’s talk show, Piers Morgan Uncensored. When Morgan asked if Rourke was impressed by Cruise leading Top Gun: Maverick to gross more than $1 billion worldwide, Rourke scoffed at the question. “That doesn’t mean shit to me,” Rourke said. “The guy’s been doing the same effing part for 35 years. I got no respect for that.” Rourke went on to say that he doesn’t “care about money and power,” and highlighted the work of actors he does hold in high esteem. “I care about when I watch Al Pacino work and Chris Walken and De Niro’s early work, and Richard Harris’s work and Ray Winstone’s work. That’s the kind of actor I want to be like. Monty Clift and Brando back in the day. A lot of guys that tried to stretch as actors.”

After Rourke’s slight dig at Robert De Niro, Morgan asked him point-blank whether he thinks Cruise was a good actor. Rourke took a beat before saying, “I think he’s irrelevant in my world.”

Despite being irrelevant (to Rourke), Top Gun: Maverick has grossed a reported $1.18 billion at the worldwide box office and almost $600 million in the U.S, making it the highest grossing film of 2022 so far. It’s also the biggest film of Cruise’s career and currently holds a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. So while it’s true that Cruise has almost entirely relegated his film work to sequels for the past several years, he certainly has a hungry and satisfied legion of fans. And who knows? Maybe Cruise will finally win Rourke over with a Tilda Swinton–esque performance in the two-part Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning, which is set to hit theaters in 2023 and 2024. But even if he doesn’t (which, he probably won’t), we have a sneaking suspicion that Cruise is doing just fine.
