Under the Santa Anas

On Monday, 6 January, the National Weather Service warned Los Angeles residents of high Santa Ana winds. The Santa Anas stir in the deserts of Southern California, rush up over the mountain ranges that separate the high, dry inland regions from the coast, and then surge, hot and blustering, down towards the ocean. They often come in autumn but can strike at any time, drying out the air and cloaking the city in a shroud of brown dust.

It was​ all sweetness verging on smugness. On the evening of Monday, 6 January we sat in the hot tub in the backyard and looked at the unfull moon. There were really only two small questions preoccupying me. Was that star actually Venus? And, also, was I wrong to feel slightly sad that the Christmas tree had finally been disentangled from its ornaments and was going into the garbage?

Sunset is the beating heart of Los Angeles, the street that is photographed by tourists and desired by businesses. It extends along 23.6 miles (38 kilometers) and has 17,383 door numbers. There are palm trees everywhere, grandiose mansions and decadent apartments, pricey restaurants and simple hamburger joints, luxury stores and street markets; also to be found there is part of Beverly Hills and the University of California.

New fire in Hollywood Hills adds to nightmare scenario in Los Angeles

Authorities anticipate a break for firefighters as wind speeds are expected to decrease, offering some respite after a devastating toll: approximately 2,000 structures destroyed, five lives lost, and more than 150,000 people evacuated

A new blaze broke out on Wednesday evening in the Hollywood Hills, adding to the four wildfires (Palisades, Eaton, Hurst and Lidia) threatening the city from the west, east and north. The fires have left five people dead, scorched more than 25,000 acres, destroyed around 2,000 structures and placed over 180,000 residents under mandatory evacuation orders. The new blaze, called the Sunset Fire, advanced rapidly and threatened a densely populated area containing some of the best-known symbols of the city. Authorities, however, have temporarily managed to contain its advance. By early Thursday morning, evacuation orders for the Hollywood area were lifted, though firefighters remain actively engaged in combating the blaze on the other fronts.

In the mid-50s, when Eve Babitz was 13 years old, she asked her mother, Mae, if she would buy her a leopardskin rug. “A real one, you know?” Babitz’s sister, Mirandi, reminisces on a video call from her home in Los Angeles – laughing at her elder sibling’s spunky request. Their mother said no. But she cushioned the blow by offering to get her a leopard print swimsuit instead. “There’s a picture of her wearing it reading Elinor Glyn,” Mirandi continues. “I mean, there you go,” she chuckles. “That’s what she gravitated to.”

“Good evening, Los Angeles. I’m happy to be able to share great music with a great audience. On behalf of my colleagues I’d like to say how glad we are to be here, and so, thank you for coming. Thank you very much.”

That was how El Cigala, one of Spain’s most popular flamenco singers, kicked off his concert at the Hollywood Bowl on Wednesday night.

But the truth was very different. On Tuesday evening, the night before the performance, his wife of 25 years, Amparo Fernández, had died.
