While the older generations might have their Audreys and their Marilyns, these days, the true litmus test of an actress’s broader youth-culture currency is not whether she’s commonly referred to by her first name only—it’s whether she has been deemed worthy of a moniker that’s an amalgam of her first and last names, like ScarJo and K-Stew and LiLo (not to mention K-Stew’s boyfriend, R-Patz). But collapsing one’s name isn’t a badge of approval so much as a mark of obsession. It doesn’t mean that you’re better at what you do than anyone else. It doesn’t mean that you’re unconditionally beloved. Rather, it signifies that you’ve become an object of fixation, which is usually preceded by some sort of professional watershed, or an association with an overwhelming cultural phenomenon, or because you’re frequently photographed looking shiny and heavy-lidded while straddling a banquet at Trousdale in a short skirt and stilettos, an unlit cigarette wedged backwards into the corner of your mouth.

I’m at Angelika East for the premiere of Mona Fastvold’s Discipline, a conceptual, dance-centric short commissioned by Miu Miu Women’s Tales. This is the 31st film in a series created to “celebrate femininity and vanity,” and I can’t think of a better subject to toast to. Speaking of toasts, there are trays of champagne, Miu Miu-branded popcorn bags, and a lot of delicious outfits. Our modern day Bessette is here (Sarah Pidgeon), as is Chloë Sevigny, Myha’la Herrold,  Hailey Gates, and just about every other New York It girl with a proximity to film and fashion. More importantly, the literal star of the show Amanda Seyfried has just slid up to the step and repeat, and I only have three minutes to interview her.

AMANDA SEYFRIED

Amanda Seyfried, born on December 3, 1985, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, began her journey in the entertainment industry as a child model before transitioning to acting in the late 1990s. Her early television work in “As the World Turns” and “All My Children” honed her craft, but it was her breakout role as Karen Smith in the 2004 comedy “Mean Girls” that introduced her to global audiences. Her blend of comedic timing and natural charm captured Hollywood’s attention, propelling her into a series of acclaimed projects that showcased her ability to balance innocence with emotional depth. By the mid-2000s, she had emerged as one of the most promising young actresses of her generation, seamlessly navigating between independent films and major studio productions.
