Cuerpos humanos que, muchas veces, rompen el límite del binarismo de género se entrelazan en una exquisita composición explícitamente erótica. Sin embargo, lo que se ve impreso en las más de 150 obras exhibidas en “Love” en la C/O Berlin no son para nada imágenes pornográficas.

Lo que se ve son tomas en primer plano que Ren Hang (1987-2017) hace de cuerpos humanos en simbiosis tanto con otros de su especie como con lo de animales y plantas. A través de eses cruces corporales se generan formas abstractas, poses acrobáticas y una exquisita paleta de colores orgánicos en una atmosfera introvertida, graciosa, por momentos lúdica y surreal, por otros escalofriante y provocadora.

PARIS — When Ren Hang’s nude photographs first went on display in China barely a decade ago, he was immediately identified as an artistic phenomenon and rapidly swept up by Western art galleries. His images were playful and provocative, visually stunning with an underlying sense of vulnerability, sometimes bordering on pornography, but never vulgar. They offered a glimpse into a Chinese youth subculture outsiders rarely got to see.

One of China’s most distinctive young photographers, Ren Hang makes cool, saturated images that are tightly composed and lit with stark flash. Prominently featuring red lips, black hair, and supple flesh, his photography creates a world where sex, desire, and the joy of voyeurism create a visceral effect. Although most of his recent solo exhibitions have been held outside of China, viewers have gravitated toward his work when it has appeared in group shows in Beijing and Shanghai.

The Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris is organising the first exhibition dedicated to Ren Hang’s work since his tragic passing. In this article, Artsper pays tribute to the young artist, a talented photographer known for the originality of his nude photographs. His work, as intense as it was brief, celebrated sensuality and the naked beauty of life with melancholy. He passed away before even celebrating his 30th birthday but his poetic art lives on for him.
