Pulp Fiction / No 8 best crime film of all time

Pulp Fiction: No 8 best crime film of all time

Quentin Tarantino, 1994

1994 was Quentin Tarantino's year. With audiences reeling from the shock of Reservoir Dogs two years earlier, the mantle of world's coolest film director was his for the taking. His second feature, the ambitious but oddly leisurely thriller Pulp Fiction, premiered at Cannes, where Clint Eastwood's jury awarded it the Palme d'Or. A year later, it had grossed $213m, faced off against Forrest Gump at the Academy Awards and planted an entire library of off mbeat references and quotable lines in the heads of susceptible cinemagoers. It would not be overstating the case to call it a phenomenon.
The idea of a portmanteau crime film had been cooked up by Tarantino and his old video store colleague, Roger Avary (who got a "story by" credit). But the picture's magic touch is the anti-chronological structure which enables its three stories to intersect in unusual ways – so the final story predates the first one, and a character who dies in the middle story reappears at the end, striding off toward a demise we have witnessed, but about which he can have no possible inkling. In the first chapter, two hitmen, Vincent (John Travolta) and Jules (Samuel L Jackson), take possession of a mysterious briefcase before Vincent goes on to chaperone his boss's girlfriend (Uma Thurman) on an evening that spins wildly out of control. The second story follows a boxer, Butch (Bruce Willis), whose failure to throw a fight as instructed leads him into territory which might reasonably be described as hellish. The closing episode has an unexpected air of sitcom about it as Vincent and Jules turn to a clean-up specialist named the Wolf (Harvey Keitel) when a misfired gun leaves a nasty mess in the back of their car. All this is bookended by scenes in a diner that is being held up by two excitable young crooks (Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer).
For better or worse, the movie made possible the long reign of Miramax, revived Travolta's career and ratified Tarantino's reputation. Familiarity with the director's box of tricks has bred a touch of contempt, but it's becoming easier, now that the hype has cleared, to see the movie for what it really is: an audacious attempt to fuse visual chutzpah and expansive storytelling, movies and music, art and trash. It's a true one-off.

Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino / Pictures of the inseparable pair over two decades

Thurman & Tarantino

Pictures of the inseparable pair

over two decades

Quentin Tarantino and Uma Thurman are reportedly dating, 20 years after making Pulp Fiction.

Writer and director Tarantino has long referred to the actress as his "muse", while Thurman has often said that despite their differences, the pair are somehow very compatible.

Thurman recently split from French financier fiancé Arpad Busson, with whom she has a 21-month-old daughter.

Tarantino's motto has been: "I've made a choice, so far, to go on this road alone. Because this is my time to make movies."

We've delved into the archives and discovered 12 heart-warming pictures of the inseparable Thurman and Tarantino spanning two decades below:

1. The wallpaper, the cigar, Thurman's incredulous expression... These two look like a pretty cool couple as they promote the release of Pulp Fiction in '94.

3. This was actually taken in 2001, so we're not sure what excuse Tarantino or Thurman have for their eye-catching cowboy-style outfits, which they not only wore out, but to a screening party at the Cannes Film Festival.

Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino dating?

Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino dating?

  • Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino have known each other for years
  • Uma has appeared in a number of Tarantino films
  • It is now claimed that the two stars are dating

There is not a day goes by that we do not get a romance rumour of some sort, whether it be claims that two stars are dating, or reports that a romance has come to an end, or anything else in between. When it comes to the dating rumours we have seen some absolutely outrageous claims, which turn out to be completely untrue, while there have been others that would make perfect sense, like todays dating rumour.

Hollywood actress Uma Thurman has been good friends with moviemakerQuentin Tarantino for years, having worked on a number of movie projects with the director over the years, including the likes of Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill movies. It has now been reported that Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantinoare dating, with the couple sharing a villa at the Cannes Film Festival earlier in the year.

A supposed source told Us Weekly, "They had a thing and got together again recently. He's loved her for years" Meanwhile, another insider went on to add, "There has always been an attraction. She has indulged from time to time, and that's how their relationship has always worked."

It is not the first time that Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino have been romantically linked to one another, with them both denying any romance rumours in the past. Quentin has previously dated Mira Sorvino, Sofia Coppolaand Julie Dreyfus, while Uma has been married to Hollywood stars Gary Oldmanand Ethan Hawke in the past, as well as being engaged French businessman Arpad Busson.
