Queen Elizabeth meets Pope John Paul II October 17, 1980 |
Today’s meeting with Pope Francis won’t be the first time Queen Elizabeth II has met a Roman Pontiff. In her many years as Queen of England, the queen has met with several popes, two of whom will soon be canonized saints. She met with John XXIII, John Paul II, Benedict XVI and now Francis, pictured below.

Elizabeth II, devoted and devout 'defender of the faith'
From the beginning of her reign, Elizabeth II took her title of defender of the faith and supreme head of the Church of England to heart. Religion was always very present in the life of the sovereign, who was also open to other Christian traditions.

Elizabeth II, who passed away Thursday night at the age of 96, did not confide much about her private feelings, including to those closest to her. Her public speeches were written in advance, by others than her, and did not show much about the depth of her thoughts, with the exception, perhaps, of her traditional Christmas speeches.
Elizabeth II never once broke from this truly British tradition: Every year of her reign (broadcast on radio until 1957 and then also on television), she addressed her wishes to millions of people in the Commonwealth. In these reputedly handwritten speeches, she regularly testified to her faith and the place of God in her life.
