When Angelina Jolie’s leg stole the Academy Awards show this past February, the fashion police raged. Shocked and bemused, no one would have predicted at the time that the thigh-high slit in that Atelier Versace dress combined with Jolie’s deliberate, look-at-my-leg pose would start a red-carpet trend. But alas, the Angelina Effect has taken hold of red carpets everywhere, from New York to Hollywood and Antibes. A repeat offender, the model Anja Rubik took the look to new heights in an Anthony Vaccarello dress slit on the right for the Met Ball, and then in Roberto Cavalli at the Cannes Film Festival. “There is something so seductive about the movement of a dress with a high slit,” said Jason Wu, who designed the racy lace dress worn by the model Jessica Stam to the CFDA Awards earlier this month. “It definitely makes you look twice.” Also spotted at the CFDA Awards was the model Hilary Rhoda, in modernist Rebecca Minkoff. “Adding a slit to a long dress makes it feel less formal,” Minkoff said. “It’s a modern bombshell look.” That’s got legs, no doubt.
