Jiří Havlík
(It is the female figure – its structure, its poses, its many emanations – that fascinates Czech artist Jiří Havlík. He portrays femininity in all of its facets and relations. He says: “I very often paint women’s beauty. Women are also linked to erotica, which can be symbolically expressed in many different ways. I am also interested in the social relationships created by women, and in the concept of the celebration of life in general.” His paintings carry the lightness and humour of everyday cartoons yet reflect the seriousness that is a trait of all good and lasting art. The female figure is shown sitting, reclining, dancing. Alone, with pets and partners.
Jiří Havlík was born in 1962 in Vyšší Brod and now lives and works in Český Krumlov. Trained as an artistic gilder, he graduated from the Secondary School of Applied Arts (specialising in Painting, Architecture and Advertising) in Uherske Hradiste in the South Moravia region of the Czech Republic.
His main areas are painting, graphics, sculpture and photography but he also writes poetry and short texts. Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Vercors (Jean Bruller), Bohumil Hrabal, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Ernest Hemingway are some of the authors that he admires.
His works can be found in private collections in his country and Austria, Germany, France, Canada, Australia, Japan and the US. In 2010, he was the winner of the eight round of the Showdown competition at Saatchi Gallery, London.
